Overview
The Common Rough Woodlouse (Porcellio scaber) is one of the most popular isopod species in the hobby. They are native to Europe but have been introduced worldwide. These isopods are known for their hardiness and adaptability, making them an excellent choice for beginners.
Characteristics
- Size: Adults reach 15-20mm in length
- Color: Gray to brown with a rough, textured exoskeleton
- Behavior: Very active, excellent for bioactive enclosures
- Lifespan: 2-3 years in captivity
Habitat Requirements
Provide a substrate depth of at least 5-10cm with plenty of hiding places. Cork bark, leaf litter, and sphagnum moss create an ideal environment. They appreciate moderate to high humidity but can tolerate drier conditions better than some other species.
Breeding
Porcellio scaber breeds readily in captivity. Females carry eggs in a marsupium (brood pouch) for 3-4 weeks before releasing fully formed juveniles. With proper care, colonies can grow quickly.
Tips for Success
- Keep substrate slightly moist but not wet
- Provide plenty of hiding places
- Offer varied diet including calcium sources
- Maintain stable temperature and humidity
